The big idea: AI adoption in hospice is not really a technology challenge. It is a trust challenge.
Agape Care Group, a long-standing Muse user and early beta partner, has spent years proving that predictive analytics can support clinicians without replacing their judgment.
Why it Matters
Hospice care depends on timing. A missed signal of decline can mean a missed opportunity to comfort a patient, support a family, or help loved ones say goodbye.
Muse helps Agape identify subtle changes in patient condition and prioritize the patients who may need more attention.
As Shirley Edwards, VP of Corporate Operations at Agape Care Group, put it: “Not one single family member or patient should ever have to pass without the support and the level of comfort, and support from a hospice organization that they deserve.”
The Shift
Agape was not shopping for predictive analytics when Muse first entered the picture.
“We weren’t looking for the solution. The solution found us,” Shirley said.
What stood out was the potential to use data as another set of clinical eyes — not to override clinicians, but to help them see what might otherwise be missed.
How they Built Trust
Agape did not roll Muse out as “one more thing” for every branch to manage.
Instead, the organization centralized Muse monitoring with a team of experienced hospice nurses who support the platform seven days a week, 365 days a year.
That gave branch leaders and clinicians a clearer path: trust the insight, follow the protocol, and stay focused on the patient.
As Shirley said, “Technology adoption is a commitment to people, not commitment to the technology.”
The Clinician View
Dr. Jeffrey Nelson, Regional Medical Director at Agape Care Group, started where many clinicians do: interested, but skeptical.
His first reaction was “cautious optimism or skepticism, turning to optimism.”
For him, the value became clear when Muse proved easy to use and clinically relevant. It did not tell clinicians how to care for a patient. It helped point them toward the patients who needed their attention.
“It’s an additive to what you do,” Dr. Nelson said. “It’s not telling you how to have the visit. It’s pointing you where to go and use those skills and that wisdom you’ve accrued.”
The Proof Point
Early in the rollout, Muse flagged a patient as declining. The nurse had just seen the patient and did not believe they were transitioning.
Shirley asked her to follow the protocol and increase visit frequency anyway.
Within three days, the patient passed.
The nurse later called Shirley and said, “Well, I’m a believer. I would have never thought that that my patient was transitioning.”
Why it worked: The tool did not undermine the nurse’s expertise. It gave the team a chance to act sooner.
The Bigger Impact
Muse has changed how Agape prioritizes patients, reviews risk, supports IDG discussions, and identifies documentation or education opportunities across regions.
It also helps Agape connect performance metrics back to the human purpose behind them.
“Hospice is not about giving up. Right? It’s about showing up,” Shirley said. “And that’s what Muse helps us to do better.”
What's New
Mosai’s new Time in Home feature gives leaders a clearer view of where documentation is happening at the branch and clinician level.
That matters because documentation completed in the home can be more timely, accurate, and reflective of the patient’s condition. If documentation is happening after the visit, leaders can identify coaching opportunities and support clinicians in capturing patient changes while they are still with the patient.
The Bottom Line
AI adoption is not “set it and forget it.”
Shirley’s advice to leaders: keep teaching, keep evaluating, keep sharing the moments when the tool helped the team act sooner, and keep reconnecting the data to the purpose.
“It’s not about the data. It’s not about the metrics,” she said. “Yes. We need that, but let’s focus on the purpose behind them.”
